The formula
Attendance percentage = classes attended ÷ classes conducted × 100.
If 40 classes have been conducted in a subject and you attended 33, your attendance is 33 ÷ 40 × 100 = 82.5%.
Per subject, not just overall
Many colleges check attendance subject by subject. Your overall figure can look safe while one subject is short:
| Subject | Attended | Conducted | Attendance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physics | 27 | 30 | 90% |
| Chemistry | 18 | 30 | 60% |
| Overall | 45 | 60 | 75% |
The overall figure is exactly 75%, but Chemistry is at 60%. If your college applies 75% per subject, you're short in Chemistry. Always check each subject on its own.
Rounding
Most results aren't whole numbers. 29 of 39 is 74.36%. Some colleges round to the nearest whole number, some truncate, and some don't round at all. Treat any figure below your target as below it unless your college's rules say otherwise.
What counts as a class
Lectures, labs and tutorials may be counted together or separately, and a lab session may count as one class or as two. Cancelled classes usually aren't counted as conducted. Ask your department or check the portal so your own numbers match the official ones.
Keep your own count
Portals are often updated late. Counting your own classes as they happen means you see a problem weeks before the official list does.
Check your own numbers
The attendance calculator works out your percentage, the classes you can miss and the classes you need, for 75%, 80%, 85% or any target.
