How to improve your college attendance

Most attendance shortages aren't caused by one bad week. They come from not noticing a slow slide until it's too late to fix.

Track it yourself, per subject

Note every class as present or absent, subject by subject, on the day it happens. Portal figures often lag, and an overall percentage can hide one subject that's slipping.

Start with the subject closest to the line

Each week, find the subject with the least room. That's the one to protect first, even if it's the class you'd most like to skip.

Fix shortages early

Recovering takes far more classes than falling behind. At 75%, getting from 70% back to 75% with 50 classes conducted takes 10 classes in a row. The same gap with fewer classes left in the semester may not be fixable at all.

Plan absences in advance

If you know you'll be away for a family event or an exam, work out which subjects can absorb it before you go, and attend those subjects' other classes beforehand to build room.

Count the classes that are left

Multiply classes per week by the weeks left in the semester. If even attending every remaining class can't reach your target, you need to know now, not in the last week.

Talk to faculty in time

If illness or something serious keeps you away, tell your teacher or department as soon as you can, and keep your documents, such as medical certificates. Rules on leave and condonation vary, and they're easier to use when raised early.

See where you stand

The attendance calculator works out your percentage, the classes you can miss and the classes you need, for 75%, 80%, 85% or any target.
